Well it’s fair to say that over the weekend much of the media coverage was dominated by two men: Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage.
Johnson’s resignation as an MP has been flanked by two of his close allies in Nadine Dorries and Nigel Adams also quitting.
Could Rishi Sunak’s party now lose three Tory-held seats in by-elections?
Certainly at the moment the Conservative Party seems to have drifted away significantly from the ideas - and personnel - who secured the party that historic 2019 majority.
So what will Boris Johnson now do? Get out of politics forever? Seems highly unlikely.
Look at returning as Tory Leader when the party is back in opposition?
Or perhaps Johnson is so cheesed off that he would consider a political return outside of the Conservatives, as part of a force looking to defend the Brexit legacy he has very much been part of.
That may seem farfetched - but it is certainly being discussed. The Sun’s Trevor Kavanagh has penned a piece today with the title: “Could a reformed Boris Johnson lead Nigel Farage’s Reform Party or is it just fantasy politics?”
In terms of Farage, he has teased what would be a fresh political earthquake. That a number of Brexiteer Tory MPs - double digits - may consider defecting.
Certainly the Brexiteer voting coalition that delivered the Tories victory in 2019 has been shattered.
The Government has simply not delivered radical post-Brexit change. In particular the choice to increase levels of immigration rather than reduce them is bonkers.
As is the Government’s refusal to leave ECHR as the boats continue to cross from France.
Farage has said repeatedly that the gap between Westminster and the public is now larger than it was a decade ago.
That’s true - though of course the horrifically outdated First Past The Post voting system is a significant barrier for new parties to breakthrough.
But few politicians in Britain have the profile and following of Farage and if other big beasts were prepared to help break the mould then it could be done.
Watch this space.
My thought on this is I can't remember Boris getting Brexit done ? The waters are still full of European fishing boats, the immigration is broken and we're still full of EU laws, need I go on,I hope Nigel knows what he's doing after all it was Nigel giving Boris an 80 seat majority and look what happened to that. I think it's a BIG gamble !!!
An idea to be considered . All the political circus performers should be re educated by specialist .
They are spectrum and should be classed as "SPECIAL NEEDS"
BAN the use of "My right honourable friend " "HONOURABLE". My arse.
