Suella is spot on and why am I surprised to hear this is not government policy. I was given to understand by Truss herself that we would leave ECHR. More misinformation and deceit it seems?
Suella is 💯 spot on with her view of ECHR and she’s got the mood of Brexit voters correct too! I cannot fathom why Truss would appoint someone so well equipped with expert legal knowledge to the job of Home Secretary and then fail to back Suella on this issue! As ever, it seems that there are too many elites poking the fire behind the scenes to keep things right for themselves, and all of a sudden political backbones start disappearing from those that proclaimed themselves ‘saviours’ of British laws, values and borders! I can see it Writ Large... Truss will sell us down the river bit by stealth bit!
I am starting to feel a creeping sense of despair. To hear that leaving the echr is “not government policy” after all we have been through in recent months is heartbreaking.
I’m sure that for many of us, it’s been an emotional rollercoaster. I sometimes feel that ignorance is bliss. To be engaged in politics since 2016 has been almost sadomasochistic.
Braverman has been put in an impossible situation. She has been put in at the crease and expected to hit sixes but her bat has been taking away and she faces six bowlers at once. How can she do the job she was selected for in those circumstances. Truss is going to lose the right wing as well as the left unless she bucks her ideas up.
It’s because the ECHR is effectively written through the UK’s political landscape - it’s directly written into the Belfast Good Friday Agreement, the Trade and Cooperation Agreement with the EU, the Devolution Settlement involving the the Scottish and Welsh Parliament & the Northern Ireland Assembly.
So, as such, it seems extremely unlikely that the UK would withdraw entirely and personally I think it’s a Non-starter like Rees Mogg implied recently.
I think a good deal with the French, safe routes, quickening asylum applications (because they are currently monstrously slow), boosting funding for the National Crime Agency to tackle the smugglers who are at the heart of this problem - would be more than sufficient.
It’s also worth noting what Italy and Sweden do under their new regime to tackle their migration problem.
But again, I think, like Rees-Mogg and others that leaving the ECHR is a non-starter and would be a political landmine given how embedded it is & given there’s less that two years until an election and the Govt needs to simultaneously tackle a Cost of Living Crisis and an energy crisis.
The most sensible thing would be to reduce the influence or ignore Strasbourg like the Germans & Spanish have done (they have low compliance ratings).
I think having Gove behind her in the running, was the kiss of death, but she'll definitely go far if the Tories don't totally commit suicide before the next GE....the same for Kemi.

A strange situation whereby the PM and Home Secretary seem increasingly at odds on policy already!
I would have been happy if Suella had become our new Prime Minister....she has the oomph that Liz sadly seems to lack.
I think Suella Braverman is superb. Hope the Government implement her agenda but not looking good.

And after appointing a Home Secretary who has openly stated the need to leave ECHR!
Adrian, well described. I think there are very many of us who feel that same creeping sense of despair.

Thank you Michael btw.
Hearing the GB News interview this morning with the author of the new book about Boris Johnson was very revealing. I might buy the book!
Hi David, thanks for your comment. Didn't see this but will take a look!
