Thousands Back Boris Petition, Truss PM Favourite and Labour Given Big Lead
I’m told the Conservative Post’s petition calling for Boris Johnson to be included in the Tory leadership ballot picked up huge momentum with 2,700 members backing the call within 24 hours.
Then the Post’s website mysteriously went down yesterday just as it was gaining even bigger momentum. Cock-up or conspiracy?
There is no doubt that the resignation of Boris Johnson is vastly different to that of Theresa May’s, with Boris retaining much more support.
Indeed a majority of you who voted in the poll in a previous edition of the Brexiteer Bulletin backed Boris over any of the current leadership candidates.
I will of course update you on what happens next with this pro-Boris petition that has already garnered considerable attention and support.
I don’t recall Labour ever having many double digit leads over Boris Johnson until the wheels really came off and the Tory MP rebellion was in full swing.
But Labour do now have big leads over the Conservative Party in hypothetical head-to-heads now against the three MPs now in the race to be PM.
Keir Starmer’s Labour currently lead a Sunak Government by 11 points, lead Mordaunt by 12 points and Truss by 14 points. I would liked to have seen Kemi Badenoch’s head-to-head numbers but she of course was unfortunately knocked out of the race yesterday.
Whilst it is fair to say that the new Conservative Leader and Prime Minister will need time to establish themselves to voters, these numbers show why some Conservatives are already wondering if they would have been better off sticking with Boris.
Liz Truss is now the bookies’ favourite to become our next Prime Minister.
With the last round of MPs voting taking place today, it looks nailed-on that Rishi Sunak will make the final two run-off.
Despite Sunak leading in the MPs vote however, Truss is the current favourite to win the membership vote.
YouGov’s latest polling of the Conservative grassroots, who will decide between the final two candidates, shows Truss now leading Mordaunt by 6 points, whilst having a massive nearly 20-point advantage over Rishi Sunak. Truss leads him by 54% to 35%.
Liz Truss of course campaigned for Remain in 2016, but has since been backed by staunch Brexiteers like Jacob Rees-Mogg and Lord Frost.
The real question is would she as a Remainer be able to win back support of the Brexiteer voter coalition that Boris won over to secure that stunning pro-Leave majority at the last election?
