So today Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Home Secretary Suella Braverman will put forward the Government’s plan to stop the illegal migrant boats.
Dubbed the Illegal Migration Bill, the plan has been in the works for a while with some Conservative MPs growing impatient, probably under pressure from furious constituents.
Rightly so, given boat crossings in 2023 have already been higher than in 2022 when tens of thousands of people crossed. This year’s rate of crossings has been around 86% higher.
We await to see the exact details of what is in this new Government plan. The insane reality is that nearly a year after announcing the Rwanda policy, after ECHR intervention, there is still absolutely no sign of Rwanda happening any time soon.
And we still have the bizarre situation of a Home Secretary saying clearly that the UK must leave ECHR, but the Prime Minister refusing to implement that policy.
There are signs now though that a Conservative rebellion is finally brewing on the ECHR.
