What a remarkable coincidence.

Just as Reform surge in the polls to new highs, suddenly Labour want to try and act tough on border controls and immigration.

The Government now talk of ending the ‘open borders experiment’. There is no doubt that the Conservative legacy of net migration levels close to 1 million were extreme.

But this is a Labour Party and Prime Minister in Keir Starmer who campaigned against Brexit, and for the EU’s open borders system.

The same Starmer who then pledged to restore EU open borders if he became Prime Minister.

He was even quoted as saying:

“We have to make the case for Freedom of Movement. And we have to make it strongly.”

Even with today’s tough talk, Labour refuse to commit to any specific numbers when it comes to cutting migration.

It will clearly continue to run deep into the hundreds of thousands net per year, as it did under the Tories.

That is an extreme policy that has led to a ridiculous population surge.

As the Office for National Statistics recently explained:

“The population of England and Wales at mid-year 2023 was estimated to be 60.9 million (60,854,727).

“This is an increase of 610,000 (1.0%), the largest annual numerical increase in at least 75 years.”

The scale of what we’re seeing is totally irresponsible:

“We estimate the population of England increased by a total of 7.0% (3,772,000) between 2013 and 2023.”

Labour’s pledge to do anything about this whatsoever is being driven by the rise of Reform. This is what’s really going on.
