RIP Ann Widdecombe
It has been a devastating few days.
A national icon, a truly incredible lady, and such a tragic end.
When the news first broke of Ann Widdecombe’s death, I was of course sad.
But when it was then announced that a murder investigation had been launched, I became angry that someone could have harmed a sweet 78-year-old lady.
I briefly got to spend just a bit of time with Ann as a Brexit Party MEP. She was an absolute delight and adored by us all.
Sharp, witty and wise, I greatly enjoyed her barnstorming speeches in the European Parliament.
Universally respected, it was a genuine privilege to have got to spend just a little time around her.
When Ann spoke, you listened. Simple as.
This was a woman of enormous principle and duty. A true conviction politician who the nation will greatly miss.
As I write this, the thought of Ann suffering alone is just too much to bear.
Initially the police had said that there was no evidence of a political motivation.
We now know that Counter Terrorism Policing are leading the investigation.
This is the latest information from the police:
“Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) can confirm it is now leading the investigation into the death of Ann Widdecombe.
“Specialist officers from across the CTP network have been working alongside colleagues in Devon and Cornwall Police since a murder investigation was launched last week.
“Officers were called to Miss Widdecombe’s home at Haytor, Devon, by the ambulance service at around 11.40am on Thursday 9 July.
“Sadly, 78-year-old Miss Widdecombe was located deceased within the property. She had sustained serious injuries.
“A 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday 11 July.
“New information and evidence has come to light during what has been a dynamic and complex investigation and as a result, Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) is now leading the investigation.
“The man in custody has since been re-arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.”
