Good morning! You are waking up to the aftermath of a hugely dramatic General Election.
Yes, Labour have secured a big majority. That looked increasingly certain in recent weeks.
As to why voters backed Keir Starmer’s party? Well just look at this from YouGov:
“We asked Labour voters to tell us in their own words the main reason they are backing the party.
“For the largest number by far the key motivation is ousting the Conservatives.
“Top 5 reasons - Get the Tories out: 48%. Country needs a change: 13%. Agree with their policies: 5%. To improve NHS: 4%. Best-liked party with a change of winning: 4%.”
So by far the top motivation for many Labour voters was simply to vote out the Conservatives. Let’s see how long Starmer can keep that voter coalition together.
As for the Tories? Well Rishi Sunak’s decision to call that surprise early election has led them to oblivion.
Some of those losing their seats include Liz Truss, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Grant Shapps and Penny Mordaunt.
Who will be the opposition to this incoming Labour Government? Well the Reform Party has successfully broken through.
Nigel Farage will be in the House of Commons with a group of Reform MPs.
Farage won Clacton with over 46% of the vote and will be joined by Lee Anderson who was re-elected in Ashfield, alongside Richard Tice who won in Boston and Skegness and Rupert Lowe winning in Great Yarmouth.
There is still much to be digested and analysed. But British politics has just changed in a massive way.
Yes, we will have a new Government. But we also have a completely new opposition as well.
4 million votes, just 4 seats for Reform. But the far left LibDems, 3.5 million votes and 71 seats. What a joke. Lots of work ahead! (update, 5 seats, still outrageous)
Agreed with Mrs Bucket on the farce that is our current system of electing MPs into parliament… LibDem loonies get less votes and more MPs, it’s absurd that millions of people don’t have representation in parliament… however, Reform have their Bridgehead and 4 seats is going to ‘get the party started’, even if it’s an uphill job, Farage is nothing if he’s not tenacious! And, Reform are second in 198 seats, fantastic, two of those in Sunderland AND South Shields, that’s a massive deal in the North East and a great gauge for the rest of the country when thinking about those ‘forgotten’ areas around the country; the ones hardest hit with immigration in all its forms…come on Reform you can pick these voters off like birds on a dead carcass! Reform plant the seeds in 2024 and harvest fruit in 2029 🤞 Reform and the rest of us have to fight on… living in Leicestershire I watch in horror as Leicester South Jonathan Ashworth (for whom I have no love at all) lost his seat to sectarian votes… because of high immigration Leicester is vile, even settled migrants of many years don’t like the current state of it, and now they have an MP voted in on a ticket for Gaza, not that the idiots that voted for him realise he won’t solve their problems … so march on!
