Migration Surge
Much attention has been focused of course on illegal immigration from France - but when it comes to legal net migration, the Office for National Statistics revealed record-breaking figures today.
For context remember that it wasn't long ago that David Cameron and Theresa May had spoken in favour of cutting net migration down to the tens of thousands net per year.
In a post-Brexit era after ending EU open borders, the Conservatives have bizarrely chosen to continue with net migration deep into the hundreds of thousands each year.
This seems to be ramping up even further. The year ending June 2022 saw record 504,000 net migration in a single year, a truly astonishing and in my view absurd figure.
Population growth this rapid and vast inevitably puts strain on infrastructure. It is incredible to see debates over surging waiting lists and the housing crisis continually avoid the fact that this country has seen a massive population surge mostly fuelled by mass immigration.
Instead of a Conservative Government cutting numbers as they used to talk about, instead this record 504,000 surge far surpasses the previous record of 331,000.
This is likely to infuriate voters who largely believe immigration has been too high over the past decade. YouGov’s research conducted this month found 57% of Brits believe immigration levels have been too high, including a massive 87% of Conservative voters.
The Tory Government’s complete failure - and refusal - to cut migration is likely to mean a significant Brexiteer voter backlash.
The British Election Study’s research in 2016 found clearly that for Leave voters, immigration was by far the main issue in the referendum. Below is the wordcloud representing the dominant issues for Leavers.
The choice made by the Conservative Government seemingly not to even attempt to cut migration numbers is massively unpopular, especially with Brexiteers and Tory voters. This is what could happen next.
