Will Truss U-Turn On Euro Group?
Will the UK be joining the European Political Community, an organisation pushed by French President Emmanuel Macron?
Previously the Government, including Liz Truss herself, had indicated that the UK would not be joining.
Apparently unnamed British officials are trying to get Truss to attend. Will we see a u-turn?
EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen has given her full backing to the new group, saying:
“So I want the people of the Western Balkans, of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia to know:
“You are part of our family, your future is in our Union, and our Union is not complete without you!
“We have also seen that there is a need to reach out to the countries of Europe – beyond the accession process.
“This is why I support the call for a European Political Community – and we will set out our ideas to the European Council.”
As ever the European Union is focused on expansion. Brexiteers will be watching to see if the Truss Government chooses to join this new EU-endorsed organisation.
Change In Sweden
The result of the Swedish election has now been confirmed, with the right-wing opposition grouping of parties defeating the ruling left-wing coalition.
The rise of the Sweden Democrats has been the big story of the election and they are now the second largest party overall, and the biggest of the right-wing coalition.
It will be interesting to see what role they play in the new Swedish Government. Sweden Democrats MEP Charlie Weimers has appeared on GB News setting out the party’s priorities as controlling migration, implementing reforms to crack down on violent crime and a pro-nuclear energy policy.
This big change in Swedish politics comes after Marine Le Pen’s party recently surged to winning 89 seats in France and the Brothers of Italy’s Giorgia Meloni is currently on course to become Prime Minister after the Italian election later this month.
Support For English Parliament
A Welsh Parliament and Scottish Parliament, but no English Parliament?
It seems despite little Westminster debate around this, more English voters now support the creation of a new English Parliament than oppose.
YouGov’s recent research now shows 29% of England’s voters backing an English Parliament, with 21% opposing. 50% remain undecided about the prospect.
Interestingly both more English Leavers and Remainers support the idea than oppose it.
What about England?
