Lords Plot
One of the first big battles for the next Prime Minister is going to be the Remain-dominated House of Lords doing their best to rip apart or even kill off the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill.
The overhyped Bill, which in reality pushes for sensible changes to be made unilaterally, is staunchly opposed by many in the unelected Lords. Shocking, I know.
Peers are now plotting a major attack on the Bill. According to Politico those involved could either seek to amendment the legislation heavily or even vote it down entirely.
That is despite the Bill having been already backed by a massive majority of MPs. Not a single Tory MP voted against it.
Of course Liz Truss has been at the forefront of arguing for the Protocol Bill and if she does become PM this will be a key early battle.
Longer term though, just how much longer is Westminster politics going to include an unelected chamber with increasingly little public support?
EU Sanctions
Meanwhile EU politicians are kicking off at the prospect of the UK taking unilateral action.
Remember that despite meeting after meeting, the EU position is that they will not renegotiate the Protocol.
Thus, necessary unilateral action from the British Government looks finally to be edging closer.
Some in the EU Parliament are now pushing for Brussels to hit back if the UK does move ahead with the Protocol Bill, including potential trade sanctions.
Another challenge that Brexiteer voters will be watching closely. Will the new Prime Minister buckle to Brussels or not?
It Goes On
The ridiculous illegal migration crisis continues, highlighted by these latest shameful figures.
Between 22nd August and 27th August alone, 3,733 people crossed from France on 77 boats.
It is an absolute disgrace that illegal migration has been allowed to continue on this scale with the UK constrained by the ECHR.
The Conservative Government must stop the boats or they will lose the next election.
David Frost MP?
It seems Lord Frost could soon be David Frost MP, as many Leavers would like to see.
There have been rumours that Liz Truss wants to give Frost a key role in her Cabinet.
Personally a return for Frost as Brexit Minister would be my choice. Don’t think Brussels would be keen.
But could he one day become Prime Minister? Don’t rule it out.
Politics Home report that Frost is in talks with Conservative Associations about standing to be an MP.
The suggestion is that if he was given a key Cabinet role he may push to become an MP, saying:
“I don’t think our system works very well for prolonged periods of time when a senior Minister is not in the elected house. It’s fundamental fairness…that’s how the constitution works.”
Frost in the Commons would certainly be a big boost for the Tories.
