Braverman Back, Sunak's Red Wall Zero & Reform Defections
Will the returning Home Secretary be allowed to deliver her agenda?
Suella Braverman Returns
In a move that has sent Remoaner heads spinning, Spartan Brexiteer Suella Braverman yesterday made a dramatic return as Home Secretary.
That came of course after she resigned just a few days before with a blistering critique of the short-lived Truss Government. Braverman laid out how:
“I have concerns about the direction of this Government. Not only have we broken key pledges that were promised to our voters, but I have had serious concerns about this Government's commitment to honouring manifesto commitments, such as reducing overall migration numbers and stopping illegal migration, particularly the dangerous small boats crossings.”
Of course in the previous Government, Braverman was left as a rebel Home Secretary merely by advocating her long-held belief that the UK must ditch ECHR.
Is Braverman going to be as restricted in Rishi Sunak’s Government - or will she be allowed to get on with the job of stopping illegal migration, including finally leaving the ECHR?
Sunak’s Red Wall Zero
Such a move to stop the boats would be wise given Rishi Sunak’s limited appeal to Red Wall voters currently.
In a gigantic contrast to Boris Johnson, Sunak is currently the preferred PM choice in zero Red Wall constituencies. That will be alarming for quite a few Conservative MPs.
The YouGov research shows Keir Starmer preferred in 31 Red Wall constituencies, voters in 19 seats unsure and Sunak leading in none of them.
There is of course likely to be a while now until the next General Election. But it underlines again why Sunak should listen to the likes of Braverman if the Conservatives are going to win back support they have lost since 2019.
Reform Defections
A Reform UK Party claiming to have 500 General Election candidates selected would be significantly boosted by Brexiteer MP defections were that to happen. That possibility is certainly being discussed more and more now.
There have been reports of many dissatisfied Conservative members leaving the party and Reform receiving an influx of new supporters.
I do really enjoy reading the feedback and comments from paid subscribers so thank you and keep them coming. Barbara’s comment yesterday was that:
“As a member, the only vote I have now is with my feet.. I’m resigning from the Conservative Party as of today.”
The question is: how many others will be doing the same or can Rishi Sunak win them over?
We’ll have to see if Suella is allowed to pursue her agenda and get us out of the ECHR. This will be a key indicator of Sunak’s mind-set. The fact that she has been re-appointed is heartening news. Kemi Badenoch remaining in cabinet and picking-up Women and Equalities is another boost for the right of the Conservative party and the best bet we have in pushing back against Woke (read Marxist) ideology. Letting “The Snake” Gove back into “the tent” may appease the left so it does look as if Sunak is trying to unify the party. “Keep your friends close but your enemies closer”. I’m sorry to see JRM returning to the back benches but as he himself said, he is now free to speak his mind free from collective responsibility. I’m always interested in what JRM has to say and love the way he triggers the lefties.
Interesting weeks ahead...I can't see Suella being allowed to come out of the ECHR, I think Sunak will tell her to concentrate on the Rwanda flights and then claim a victory on illegal immigration when she returns a few. Sorry to sound like a pessimist but I think it will be same old same until the next GE. Hopefully by then the Reform Party will be ready.
