Hello and welcome back to another edition of Heaver News!
Thanks as ever for the many interesting comments from paid supporters on my last article.
Patrick is one of those very sceptical now about the Conservative Government, writing:
“What the Tories put in their manifesto is totally irrelevant as, a) they won’t win and b) if they did there is no chance they would implement it ‘due to circumstances beyond our control’, like their own wets, the HoL and the Civil Service.
“We’ve heard it all so often, they will do anything to retain power, but none of their leaders ever has the courage to make potentially controversial (ie any) decisions.”
Whilst Zorro’s assessment of Reform UK is that:
“Can Tice not afford a PR company? I'm telling you, get Alex Phillips out front. People like to see the cut of a person's jib and Tice's is becalmed, waving feebly in the breeze.”
Meanwhile Haydn provided a huge warning for the Tories:
“I never thought I would ever be anti-Tory, but for me and quite a few of my friends, also my extended family, has had enough of empty promises.
“There are indeed a few good people among the Tories with the right attitude to sort immigration, but they get thwarted each time by the Tory wets or the opposition.”
This all once again underlines why the Government’s Illegal Migration Bill is so critical.
If the Bill still fails to stop the boats, I suspect many will simply refuse to vote Conservative at the next election.
It has been toughened of course after pressure from Tory MPs. Specifically on the ECHR the Government now say:
“Amendments will also make clear that Ministers may exercise discretion in relation to interim measures issued by the European Court of Human Rights, and set certain principles under which they would make a decision whether to comply or not.
“Alongside the amendment, the Government is having constructive discussions regarding reform to the Rule 39 process in Strasbourg, to support greater timeliness, accountability and representation in such cases.”
The irony of course is that the very person championing this Bill - Home Secretary Suella Braverman - has previously explained how actually leaving ECHR is essential.
And of course we have had the usual Westminster nonsense about the Lords potentially trying to get in the way of this Bill as well. Why do we still have an unelected Lords in 2023?
So a battle ahead for this Bill and one the Tories can’t afford to lose. But if it yet again proves to be too weak, the Government may have just forfeited their last chance to win round many sceptical voters.
Dutch Sensation
Meanwhile in the Netherlands, the outcome of the political establishment ignoring voters is fully on display.
The Farmer Citizen Movement have risen in opposition to so-called green policies including the compulsory buy out of farms to meet EU climate targets.
Such has been the scale of this rise that the latest research now shows the Farmers Party would win the next Dutch election outright, securing 33 seats.
That compares to the party of the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte who are on course to slip down to 17 seats, which would be their worst result since the 1970s.
Trump Leads
Donald Trump’s support from Republican voters shows little sign of slipping.
In fact a new poll actually shows him recording his biggest lead yet, backed by an astonishing 65% of Republican voters in the US.
Once again the only other contender who comes anywhere close is Ron DeSantis.
But even he trails by a massive 45-points and no one else records over 5% support.
Trump’s lead in the Republican race is still absolutely huge and seems to still be growing.
