Brexiteers Leaving Conservatives
Have the Tories forgotten who got them that big pro-Brexit majority at the last election?
YouGov’s research shows that around 75% of Leavers backed the Conservatives at the 2019 General Election.
Of course Boris Johnson’s campaign received a huge boost when Nigel Farage announced that Brexit Party candidates would not be standing against Conservative MPs.
Fast forward to 2022 and the situation has changed dramatically. After the ousting of election winner Johnson and then Liz Truss, a Rishi Sunak-led Tory Party is now down to around half the support of Labour.
There has been no Sunak bounce. Some surveys have the Tories actually going backwards.
YouGov’s latest data shows the Tories down 3 points and Labour down 1, but with a massive lead for Keir Starmer’s party.
The most dramatic development in this November poll however is the rise in support for Richard Tice’s Reform UK. Tice recently wrote for Heaver News about the prospect of over 600 Reform General Election candidates standing at the next election.
Digging into this YouGov research it is clear that the level of Brexiteer support the Conservatives have lost is massive and tells us a number of things.
