Labour rattled by Reform’s boost.

The playing field has just been levelled folks. Don’t expect Labour and the Tories to like it.

Reform’s attempt to end the two party Tory-Labour system requires many things.

A big part of that of course is resources.

Now let’s put this into perspective.

Since January 2021, the Conservatives have raised £150m. Labour raised £128m. Reform was far behind on £38m.

I say ‘was’ because over the weekend the game was well and truly changed.

The combined donations from Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne of £72m have just made this a fair fight.

Predictably, the establishment have gone absolutely nuts.

There’s now frantic Westminster talk of changing the rules. Even of regulations being changed retrospectively. Absolutely bonkers stuff.

This is what happens when a system is challenged by outsiders whose mission is radical change. Establishment meltdown ensues.

Another reason that Labour and the Tories are so concerned is that they both lost seats to Reform last week in local Council by-elections.

In North East Derbyshire, Reform gained a seat from Labour (whose vote share more than halved).

Whilst in North Somerset, Reform won a seat off of the Conservatives who actually slipped to third behind the Liberal Democrats.

So, where does this all leave us?

Talk of Andy Burnham calling an early General Election isn’t going away.

The Holborn and St. Pancras by-election is being used as a ‘test run’ for an early General Election, Labour sources have told The Independent.

I still think an early election is likely. And Labour can expect real competition from Reform.

Survation’s latest Westminster survey for Wales reveals a fascinating landscape.

Reform actually have a 10-point lead on 31%, with Plaid Cymru in second.

But compared with the 2024 General Election, Labour are down 18 points to 19% and the Tories down 5 to just 13%.

No wonder they’re so rattled.
