The end result has been a bounce for Labour in the polls.

This was entirely expected of course.

New Leaders and Prime Ministers often enjoy a honeymoon period of optimistic support from the public.

I doubt this will last too long for Burnham. Especially when his Government have to start explaining how they’re actually going to fund any of their plans.

Further tax rises appear inevitable. That would be appalling given the extent to which workers and businesses are already being punished.

Our economy increasingly squeezes those who work hard to fund an exploding welfare bill, foreign aid splurges and an illegal migrant accommodation industry.

By the way, just to give you an idea as to how little Labour have actually done to stop the boats, here’s what has happened in recent days.

On 22nd July, 172 people crossed from France to England on 3 boats.

The next day saw 366 cross on another 3 boats. You’ll notice these boats aren’t so small anymore.

On 24th July, 103 more people crossed on a pair of boats.

And on 25th July, another 240 came across on five boats.

So this crisis hasn’t been stopped. Not even close. The Government simply aren’t willing to do what is necessary to stop it.

And yet Burnham’s early honeymoon bounce in the polls is undeniable.

Hear me out.

Yes I know lots of you will be thinking that Andy Burnham will now inevitably try and cling on until the last possible moment.

Of course a 2029 General Election could well be what we get.

But I still think there is a good chance that Burnham will go early. And there’s increasing evidence pointing to this possibility.

Remember, Burnham came in straight away talking about a ‘ten-year plan’ that he will unveil later this year.

Why would he not just announce the details now? His team have certainly had the time to prepare.

Perhaps because this could be the real plan.

Front load policy announcements now, seek a honeymoon period poll bounce and then announce the ten year plan - a manifesto - at Labour Conference.

That could then coincide with Burnham calling a snap election to actually seek a mandate for this.

After all, any ten-year plan is going to go way outside of Labour’s 2024 manifesto.

Certainly what we’ve seen so far are a flurry of expensive policy announcements from Burnham - without any detail on how they’ll be funded.

The next budget is due later this year, October/November time. Calling an early election would also avoid having to deliver an unpopular budget first.

That could be very convenient for the new Labour Prime Minister when you examine his flurry of early commitments.

Already we’ve heard of £340million being spent towards ending rough sleeping.

An £850million policy aimed at cutting electricity bills.

A £2 cap on bus fares that could cost £300million per year.

Plus a 20% cut in business rates for pubs, clubs and music venues. But only due to kick in from next April. Interesting timing, isn’t it?

And to reiterate, there seems to be precious little detail as to how any of this will be paid for.

The reality is we’re looking at massively hiked taxes under Labour. Yet again.

So does the new Government hope that this flurry of announcements deliver that poll bounce and allow them to call an election before they have to commit to huge tax rises in a budget?

Perhaps I’m reading too much into some of this and as usual, politicians in Government will bottle it and hang on in office until the very last possible moment.

However, we know that there is already massive public demand for a General Election. That pressure will continue to build.

And if Burnham’s team were planning to call an election within months, this sort of political choreography would be exactly what they’d do. Wouldn’t it?

It is a shocking legacy.

Keir Starmer proved that Labour had no real plan for power.

Despite commanding a huge parliamentary majority, Labour chose to continue with the Tory legacy.

The illegal migrant boats have kept coming. Net Zero has continued to deliver higher energy prices. Workers and businesses have been punished more and more with even higher taxes. Welfare spending has absolutely exploded.

So Starmer leaves behind a disgraceful legacy, full of empty sound bites and a complete lack of positive action.

Here’s what the public have made of it, per Opinium:

“As Starmer leaves office, the public’s assessment of his premiership is overwhelmingly negative.

“Nearly seven in ten (69%) say his government has not been a success, while only 21% believe it has been successful.

“More strikingly, 48% say their opinion of Starmer became more negative during his time as Prime Minister, compared with just 15% whose opinion improved.

“The Labour Party’s brand also suffered during its time in Government.

“Almost half (48%) say their opinion of Labour became more negative after it entered office, while only 13% say it became more positive.”

That Andy Burnham now comes in without any real mandate is outrageous.

All of the research shows big public demand for a General Election.

Just how long will Burnham’s Labour run away from public opinion for?

Burnham is likely to get an early, temporary bounce. Will he have the bottle to try and capitalise on this with a snap vote - or hang on until the bitter end?

What the latest MRP mega poll tells us is that as Starmer departs, Labour would currently lose 216 seats to Reform alone.

It turns out that just talking about ‘change’, as the country declines across the board, isn’t good enough.

So Starmer serves up a good lesson of what not to do in Government.

The Labour Leader managed to become the most unpopular Prime Minister on record which takes some doing.

Instead, you must have a plan. You must implement it quickly. You must do what you promised.

It has been a devastating few days.

The level of delusion from Labour has of course been heightened by their sheer desperation.

Their party is sinking fast and whoever the new Leader is, they will be searching to try and regain some momentum.

Who knows, perhaps it leads us to an early General Election. It wouldn’t surprise me.

But just as the establishment assured themselves that Remain would win, some now insist that there is a big clamour to Rejoin too.

That is also completely wrong, as Labour will find out if they really want to go through with that plan.

Before I get to that though, consider where the European Union is now. Because the whole project has got far worse.

Brussels now has an EU Defence Commissioner who has spoken openly in favour of an EU Army. A prospect Remainers used to describe as fantasy.

They are also pushing to abolish all national Government vetoes, including on EU foreign policy.

That would mean countries being swept up into an EU foreign policy their elected representatives may strongly disagree with. An absurd and dangerous prospect.

We’ve actually seen a similar scenario play out recently on trade, where an EU-Merocosur Deal will be imposed on the entire EU despite the likes of France and Ireland fiercely opposing it, worried about their farmers being wiped out.

What sort of democracy do you live in if those you elect are unable to block EU Deals being forced upon your country?

When it comes to EU open borders, consider the prospect of potentially one million illegal migrants being given amnesty and official legal status in Spain, thanks to the left-wing Government there.

And when it comes to the budget, the EU’s costly ambitions are clear. They are proposing an eye-watering €1.8 TRILLION budget for 2028 - 2034.

On top of all of this, some countries are now desperate to escape the EU’s so-called green agenda, with Italy calling for the suspension of Emissions Trading Scheme which is effectively a tax on companies, making them less competitive.

As for the EU’s economic performance? Well Germany’s unemployment levels recently hit a 12-year high and France crashed through an unemployment rate of over 8% this year.

So does rejoining this project really seem that wise? Well actually, despite what Labour may think, most still back Brexit and remaining outside.

Even amongst Trade Union members now, Labour are struggling as Reform’s rise continues.

Of course Keir Starmer’s party seems to have awkwardly already somewhat moved on from him - even as Starmer remains as Prime Minister and Labour Leader. For now.

Instead all eyes are on Andy Burnham and his by-election bid.

The assumption being made by many in Labour is that with Burnham in the top job, all would be different.

Indeed The Sun were the latest over the weekend to report on the possibility of a PM Burnham calling a snap General Election.

Yet Labour’s assumption that their party being led by Burnham would automatically sweep Reform away was dealt something of a blow by a new intriguing piece of research.

Instead what we can see is just how entrenched public opinion now is.

And how Labour have lost even formerly loyal supporters who used to form the backbone of their now crumbling base.

But if Reform win, it really will show that Labour can no longer reliably win anywhere, even when represented by who is meant to be their most popular figure.

So this constituency by-election has massive national ramifications.

Because it suddenly isn’t impossible to envisage a scenario where this all leads to an early General Election later this year.

Some will always take the view that Labour, or whoever the governing party is, will always cling on until the bitter end.

When a party has a big parliamentary majority the temptation for them of course is to string everything on for as long as possible.

This can prove to be a big mistake though, with a new Prime Minister and Leader often getting a ‘honeymoon’ poll bounce that soon fades away.

So as whispers grow of a potential snap General Election and what could play out in the months to come, here is what the country is beginning to brace for.
